write right write right write what?
Feb. 16th, 2010 11:36 amHere's the dilemma: I seem to be able to write action/adventure faster than other stuff (hence Amid Adversity over 6000 words in one week) but I don't seem to like it after I've written it.
I like writing moods. Moods are important. I story needs a good mood. I like unusual moods. Usually happy moods, but sometimes sad moods and angry moods. (And silly moods. I adore silly moods)
And I like writing moments. I really like writing moments. Moments go with the moods. Or the moments have/create/are the mood. I like ordinary moments and the type of moments that just stick in your head and last forever. The type of moments where things seem suddenly different or more real like you're seeing everything for the first time.
And I love weather. A good moment needs a specific type of weather. It helps create the mood. I love sun but also rain. And there's all sorts of weather to be put in. Pouring rain and weeping rain and dribbling rain. Snow! Cloudy oppressive skys, completely clear skys, blue skys with just a few fluffy clouds. It can be cold and wet or warm and wet or sunny and cold. Or windy. I need to write a windy fic. I love wind. I love sun. I can't resist sun. (Must come from living in a place where it mostly rains) And I love water and light on water. I need to write something with light on water.
But along with moods and moments and weather, I'm trying to focus on the whole show not tell thing. It's the number one thing I'm working on. (along with putting in more descriptions, more substance, more texture. I want to write edible words. Why can't I write edible words?)
And I'm getting tired of the whole having the characters finally talk everything out thing. It can be good if well done and it makes sense, but long angsty conversations are beginning to bore me. Short ones are fine, but long ones are failing to keep my attention and I tend to skim over them in fics I read. Though I think I write pretty good dialogue, I'm getting tired of trying to get characters to say what I want them to say. It's better if I let them tell me what they want to say which makes it really hard to plan a fic because then you don't where they're going to take you which then makes it really hard to finish a fic because you don't know where the end is.
So I think I'm going to keep writing moments, but less they're-finally-talking moments. I'd like to write more long stuff, but I can't seem to manage to make it come together or it becomes something I don't like after I've written it, because it doesn't seem to have the emotional power of a shorter piece. I just can't seem to maintain that type of mood/power/voice over a long piece. Maybe I can manage to string together a bunch of moments and make something longer. We'll see, but I think I'm sticking to short stuff for now.
