No NaNo

I'm not doing NaNoWriMo this year which is making me feel rather guilty, not that I'm going to miss the pressure of having to write all those words, but I will miss the camaraderie and the craziness. I debated about it for a long time, I always do, but I just don't want to end up with another 50,000 words which I'll never get around to editing. I thought about spending the month editing one of my old NaNos but I still have all these Legends stories trying to pour out of me. (Using 'pour' makes it sound like my writing flows out of me instead of coming in fits and starts like it actually does.) So no NaNo, but I checked my AO3 stats the other day and considering I've already managed to write and post over 50,000 words this year, I'm pretty happy with my writing at the moment. (And considering how much unfinished fic I have, it could be that I've actually written twice that amount.) Anyway, maybe next year?

My NaNoWriMo novel is craptastic crap, but I just wrote 50,567 of non-fanfiction fiction so I am happy. I also wrote 1561 words of notes in lieu of editing though I did manage to change my main character's name about 10 times. Thank you Find/Replace! I'm probably going to have to write a whole bunch more notes within the next week so I don't forget everything that I'd like to change and possibly write an outline of how it should go. Yes, I write the novel; then I make an outline!

Things that helped with writing: Cookies! Nordic Ambient Music! Listening to Neil Gaiman read from his latest collection of short stories! Dance breaks!

Love to all NaNo Writers! I love writing with you!

So according to my dance teacher, one of her teachers told her that when experimenting to come up with a new dance you usually keep 1% and throw out the other 99% and that is probably what's going to happen with my NaNo novel. At first, I was looking on it as a very detailed outline for a novel I may write in future, but now I am looking at it as a testing ground to find out what does and doesn't work. I've already decided that one character shouldn't even be there and should have died a year earlier so he mysteriously disappears a third of the way through. In lieu of editing, I'm keeping a separate file with a long list of things that should be changed. I've also found a lot of things I should really research more about before writing about them. Anyway, still writing. Still behind.

Words written so far: 20,829

Cookies eaten so far: 6 reverse chocolate pecan, 6 oatmeal chocolate chunk, and 6 chocolate dipped shortbread.

So NaNoWriMo hasn't been going great this year. Attempting to write something original has been a bit tricky, but I felt I had to try. Nothing wrong with fanfic but it would be nice to be actually published one day if remotely possible. Anyway after a false start after realizing writing a bunch of short stories would probably actually be more difficult than writing a whole novel when writing original stuff, I deleted my first couple hundred words and started fresh on Monday. I then had to contend with work, massive cramps, an annoying cold, and my own inability to write anything remotely fast so I arrived today way behind on my word count and hating my horribly written story, but I found the solution. Reverse Chocolate Pecan Cookies! I get to eat one at least every 500 words and it seems to have worked. I wrote over 3500 words today. (And ate five cookies. I know that doesn't add up but I wrote the first 1000 before I bought the cookies)  I'm still far behind but I'm catching up. Unfortunately, this isn't going to work for everyday as it will seriously mess up my blood sugar levels, but I feel like I actually have a chance now. Anyway the way I see it, I've already written more original stuff than I have in years so even if I quit now, I've still accomplished something.

As usual, I have left it to the last minute to decide whether or not to do NaNo and what to actually write about. This has been made harder this year because I really think I need to finally write something original. I've been meaning to write original stuff for ages, but I need a push to get me started and this could be it. So I'm pretty sure I am going to do NaNo (or at least try) but I just still need to decide between two different novel ideas or whether I should stretch the rules a bit and try writing 50,000 words of original short stories. Five hours left to decide.

I'm attempting NaNo again this year. I don't know why. I must be crazy. Still haven't finished editing NaNo 2012! And next week is going to be really busy at work. But I decided I have to at least try. This year I plan to increase my word count by writing unnecessarily long and detailed descriptions of everything. It's going to be Doctor Who again because I'm in a Doctor Who mood. Or Doctor Who-ish. It's more of a Sarah Jane Adventures/ Gallifrey crossover, but I think the Doctor will have a cameo somewhere in it. I should really do Avengers since I've got some great Avengers ideas that would make a good novel. Well, I reserve the right to change to something completely different if I get stuck on the first day or two. That happened in 2012 and that's the only time I actually managed to finish it.

So there's only a couple hours left and despite the giant sprint forward of the past week, I'm obviously not going to get out the 15,000 more words I need to win, but I'm currently looking at it this way: 35,000 is much better than the 2,500 words I wrote last year which was much better than the year before that when I signed up but wrote nothing which was better than the year before that when I did nothing at all. At this rate hopefully, I'll win next year.

Congratulations to everyone who did win. You are awesome and amazing!!

Things I learned from doing NaNoWriMo )
The story I wrote is actually almost done. I still alternate between thinking its crap and thinking it's pretty good so I don't know if I'll get around to posting it or not. I'd still need to finish it off and then do some editing (I have a list of things that I need to go back and change). Unfortunately, my brain was taken over by another rabid plot bunny yesterday, so I just spent the past couple hours writing 1000 words of something completely different.
daylight_darknight: (Supernatural Family)
I have over 10,000 words! I'm supposed to be at 15,000, but I don't care. My story suddenly has a horse in it and Balthazar called Uriel a pigheaded oxbutt.

So I'm about 3000 words behind schedule and can't seem to manage more than about 1000 words most days, but considering I'm normally such a slow writer, 7000 words in a week is better than anything I've managed before and much better than I expected to be doing so I'm happy.

After much debate, I've decided at the last minute that I will attempt NaNo again this year. I wasn't sure after what happened last year, but I had this idea a few weeks ago that I thought would be good for NaNo and I spent much of today at work thinking about it and before I knew it I had the second part of the plot and a possible title. It's unsurprisingly a Supernatural fanfic and I probably should have done some research ahead of time but it's a little late now.

So, I am HERE for anyone who wants to be buddies.

Every year, I plan to do Nanowrimo and then back out at the last minute with the excuse that I have too many half-finished fics that need completing but this year I'm actually going to do it! (Or at least, attempt to) Mostly, this is so I'll actually start working on the sequel to Practically Human and stop being distracted by every errant plot bunny demanding to be written.

So I'm under Daylight Darknight and will hopefully get around to friending (or buddying?) people if I ever stop sneezing. Busy feeling rather crappy at the moment.
